Yet a recent study by the French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health Safety (Anses) calls this idea into question. Beer bottles sealed with metal crown caps are among the containers most contaminated by microplastics—ahead of plastic bottles or cans. While the industry is seeking complex solutions to reduce these pollutants, a simple, natural option is resurfacing: cork.

An unsuspected contamination of glass bottles

This is a revelation that could prove a landmark for the agri-food sector. According to a study conducted by Anses on 121 beverage samples (water, soft drinks, iced teas, wines, beers), all contain microplastics. But the surprise comes from the category assumed to be the “cleanest”: capped glass bottles.

The results are unequivocal: up to 133 microplastic particles per litre were detected in certain bottled beers. By comparison, plastic bottles barely reach 1.6 particles per litre. Bottled water in glass, supposed to embody the premium segment, also shows a contamination level five times higher than its plastic version.

“It is a striking paradox: the container perceived as the most noble is in fact one of the most contaminated,” sums up an expert in the brewing sector.

Crown caps under scrutiny

The source of this pollution is not the glass, but the metal crown cap that seals the bottle—more specifically, its paint layer, intended to protect the metal and display the brand’s colours.

During storage or transport, this thin layer degrades. Microscopic particles detach, fall into the neck of the bottle, and end up in the drink when it is opened. The study reveals that the fragments found in the samples are chemically identical to those present on the tested crown caps.

Methods such as compressed-air blowing or alcohol rinsing can reduce contamination—by up to 70% in some cases. However, they require investment and industrial adjustments, and do not guarantee complete elimination.

A natural material resurfaces: cork

In light of these findings, a well-known alternative—until now marginal in the beer world—stands out as obvious: the cork stopper.

Already widely used for wine, this natural material combines multiple advantages. It is inert, biodegradable, and contains no paint or plastic. It provides excellent sealing, while also being visually associated with authenticity and artisanal craftsmanship.

One specific model, the “Maria” stopper developed by Portuliège, a French company, is beginning to appeal to certain breweries. Designed for beer, this stopper is made from micro-agglomerated cork and fits within a sustainable approach.

A simple solution, industrial barriers

However, adopting cork in the brewing sector is not straightforward. Current bottling lines are calibrated for crimped crown caps. Switching to a stopper requires new equipment and adjustments to logistics flows.

Another barrier is unit cost. A cork stopper costs more than a crown cap. But according to several manufacturers, this gap can be absorbed within premium ranges, where a natural image plays a central role.

“What we sell with cork is not just a stopper—it is a product experience,” explains a craft brewer from the South-West, who recently adopted the Maria stopper.

Health impact: a matter of dose and caution

Anses reiterates that the exact impact of microplastics on human health is not yet known. However, early studies point to risks of inflammation, hormonal disruption, and accumulation in certain organs.

The issue is not the presence of a fragment in a glass of beer, but the total of what we ingest every day—through water, food, and air. In this context, every avoidable source deserves attention.

“Cumulative exposure to microplastics has become a reality. Acting on packaging is an immediate lever,” warns a toxicologist at Inserm.

Cork: a marketing and environmental asset

Beyond reducing contaminants, switching to cork can provide a competitive advantage. In a saturated beer market, where major brands and microbreweries alike seek to stand out, packaging becomes a selling point.

A cork stopper evokes quality, tradition, and respect for the environment. It appeals to consumers who are mindful of their health and their impact. It also aligns with the “slow drinking” trend—this measured, conscious consumption that values short supply chains and local know-how.

A shift underway?

Several signals suggest that cork adoption could accelerate. Some organic distributors already require plastic-free packaging. Independent brewers, in France as well as Germany, are testing limited runs with natural stoppers.

In Brussels, the European Commission is working on new standards for food packaging, including thresholds for microparticle migration. Metal crown caps, with their fragile paints, could well be among the first affected.

Conclusion: returning to the roots to move forward

The issue of polluting crown caps calls a symbol into question. Glass is not neutral if its closure pollutes. Conversely, long-standing solutions such as cork offer surprisingly modern prospects.

Without waiting for regulation, the players betting on natural solutions gain a head start—in terms of quality, brand image, and environmental responsibility.

Cork may not be a universal solution, but it is a tangible response—available and proven. And in a sector where innovation coexists with tradition, that can sometimes be worth more than a speech.

Virginie Lopes

References: Anses; Process Alimentaire; Techniques de l’Ingénieur; UFC-Que Choisir

Glass is often presented as the most virtuous container for beverages.
