Bottle and Cork: How to Choose the Right Combination?

Did you know? Not all bottles are suitable for all wines!

Oh really?

The first and very important thing to know is that air does not pass through the natural cork, but along the walls of the cork and the bottle glass. Between the two!

To limit air ingress, it is therefore necessary to slow its progression between the cork and the inner wall of the bottle neck.

Do you see what I'm getting at?

Therefore, the cork should be as wide and as long as possible.

The second thing to know is that a minimum height must be maintained between the cork and the wine; this is the ullage space. For this, you need to know the fill level.

For a bottle with a fill level of 63 mm, you can use a cork 45 mm or 49 mm high. But a 54 mm high cork will not be suitable.

Because the height of the ullage space must not drop below 13 mm.

This fill level is the wine level to be reached at a temperature of 20°C for the bottle's specific volume, which is most often 75cl.

If you've followed along, that's great, you're a future champion of dry goods.

If you're a little lost, that's normal, and we're here for that.
